Decoding our need to share!

Why do we Share?

Is it an inherent human need, to communicate our feelings or thoughts? Is it our craving for appreciation? A need for solace, that propels us into expressing our selves? Our attempt to make the heart feel lighter or a way of allowing others to know us a little more? I asked myself these questions and while I continue to figure out the answer, what is as certain as day and night is that – all human beings need to share.

What do we Share?

We need to share our moments of joy and tears of sadness, sighs of despair and words of anger, moments of confusion, hour of achievement and even our memories. What we do, what we intend to do or choose not to do – the list of all that we wish to share, is endless.

How do we Share?

The medium of sharing that works best, may change from situation to situation and differs for all of us. Through words written or spoken, through pictures capturing moments significant to us, through art that gives silent expression to emotions, through food that gives comfort – We share a part of ourselves with others in a number of unique ways.

With whom do we Share?

In the years gone by, it was the close family and a handful of friends with whom one would share, the victories and pitfalls of the day. In turn, one could expect instant feedback in terms of words of joy and comfort or even sarcasm and envy with a good dollop of judgmental banter! Now, with the strength of social media we no longer have to wait for the right moment to share our lives, or give too much thought to whom we are sharing it with. Everyone on your Facebook can be part of your birthday joy, all on your Instagram list can enjoy the music show you saw and everyone on Snapchat can feel the fun of the twirl that you do – and just in a fraction of a second you can share your life.

Yet, there is a huge difference – Personal VS Impersonal.

We do feel the need to share, yet we want a degree of privacy and the feel of a personal touch. Everything isn’t really for everyone to know is it? And the moment it is not – we want our mother, our best friend, a sibling, a spouse. Someone with whom we can share it all with. Someone who is like a second skin, who isn’t judging and who understands or truly wants to. A person who is keenly interested in what we feel and values tremendously what we wish to share. Someone who really cares.

Are we always fortunate enough to have that someone in our lives? Sometimes yes and sometimes no but either way – WE STILL NEED TO SHARE.
